Siding installation in Omaha is storm work. Douglas County, which holds the whole city, logged 206 reports of hail an inch or larger from 2006 to 2025, up to 4.25 inches, and 27 of thunderstorm wind at 65 knots or more. Here is when to install, how to fasten and which Omaha rules apply.

Siding installation in Omaha: the short answer

Most results for siding omaha are contractor pages. This is research for siding installation omaha ne homeowners plan.

  • Hail is the load to plan for. 50 reports of hail 1.75 inches or larger; June and April hold 53 percent of all reports.
  • Wind finds loose panels. 211 reports of wind at 50 knots or more; ask for a design pressure label.
  • Cold changes the gaps, not the season. Below 40°F the vinyl manual widens the end gap to 3/8 inch.
  • Re-Side is a permit type. Omaha issues it without plans; changed framing means plan review.
  • Registration is not a quality check. Nebraska says so plainly.
  • After hail, the matching rule. Nebraska insurers must keep a reasonably uniform appearance.

206 reports on 69 days in the county that holds Omaha

The largest stone in Douglas County measured 4.25 inches, on August 18, 2011. June (59 reports) and April (51) hold 53 percent, and April through July 87 percent. Only 2006 and 2015 had none. 76 percent of reports began between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m.

Sarpy and Pottawattamie for comparison

South of the city, Sarpy County (Bellevue, Papillion and La Vista) logged 93 reports and the largest stone in our count, 4.50 inches on June 25, 2024. Across the Missouri, Pottawattamie County, Iowa, logged 95, up to 4.00 inches. Douglas, the most populous, has more than both together.

Most reports (156) were under 1.75 inches. The rest are the storms a wall remembers: 34 from 1.75 to 2.49 inches, 11 from 2.50 to 2.99 and five of 3 inches or more. The two largest bands fell on 13 separate days.

Our Count

Thunderstorm wind: 211 reports of 50 knots or more

The Storm Prediction Center counts “Damaging winds or speeds of 58 mph (50 knots) or greater” as severe. Douglas County logged 211 such reports on 101 days, and 27 reached the SPC's top class, “Wind speeds of 75 mph (65 knots) or greater.” May through August hold 85.3 percent of them.

Measured gusts and estimates

88 of the reports are measured gusts and 123 are estimates. The strongest measured gust was 90 knots, on June 16, 2017. The highest estimate, 100 knots, dates from June 27, 2008. Even December has five reports, so nailing matters as much as the material.

Method

How we counted the reports, and their limits

We read the twenty yearly NOAA files in October 2026 and used the SPC lines of 1 inch and 50 knots. Each line is a report that reached the National Weather Service, not every storm. We show no trend by year and no damage totals.

April through July

They hold 86.9 percent of hail reports. The risk is a storm hitting an open wall: ask how the crew covers it overnight.

March, September and October

Together they hold 5.3 percent of the hail reports, with normal highs from 52.1°F in March to 79.1°F in September. October still has 4.4 nights below freezing, so early panels may need the cold-weather gap.

December through February

Normal daily highs are 37.7°F, 33.6°F and 38.6°F: under 40°F even at midday. A normal year has 134.4 nights below freezing.

Cold Weather

Can siding be installed in winter in Omaha?

Vinyl below 40°F

Yes, with changes. Asked whether can siding be installed in winter, the vinyl manual answers with a gap rule, not a ban: “When installing in temperatures below 40° F/4.4° C, increase minimum clearance to 3/8" (9.5mm).” The normal clearance is “a minimum of 1/4" (6.4mm) clearance at all openings and stops”.

So can vinyl siding be installed in winter? By the manual, yes, with the wider gap.

Fiber cement in freezing weather

For fiber cement, James Hardie says its HZ5 line “is right at home in climates with freezing temperatures, extreme seasonal temperature variations, and snow and ice.” That is the maker's claim.

Materials

Best siding for wind and hail: what you can check

No source we read gives siding a hail rating, so a claim about the best siding for wind and hail is a sales line unless it names a test. Wind does have a label: “All polymeric claddings certified under the VSI program are required to include standard design pressure rating for wind load labeling on either product itself or the packaging.” The manual adds: “Be sure to consult with Architects, Code Officials or Building/Site Engineers about the design pressure rating required for the building prior to starting installation.”

Materials

Is vinyl siding hail resistant?

Is vinyl siding hail resistant? Not in any rated sense we could find: the industry manual covers wind labels and installation, not hail. Results for vinyl siding omaha are mostly local firms and suppliers; our vinyl siding guide covers profiles, colors and what the warranties say.

Materials

Fiber cement and Hardie siding in Omaha

Homeowners searching fiber cement siding omaha or hardie siding omaha are mostly weighing one maker's cold-climate boards against vinyl. Is fiber cement siding hail resistant? There is no shared hail rating to quote, and hail damage looks different on each material; our siding repair guide shows the signs. See also the fiber cement guide.

Materials

Steel and metal siding in Omaha

Searches for metal siding omaha ne and steel siding omaha mostly reach sheet-metal shops and suppliers. Is steel siding hail resistant? Steel will not crack the way vinyl can, but it dents. Our metal siding guide reads 18 maker warranties line by line; check what yours says about hail and denting before you sign.

Installation

Installation mistakes the VSI manual rules out

  • Nailing through the face. “Do not face-nail or staple through siding”, the manual says, because “Face-nailing can result in ripples in the siding.”
  • Caulking the trim. “Do not caulk the panels where they meet the receiver of inside corners, outside corners, or J-trim.”
  • Covering rot. “Do not install vinyl siding over rotting wood.”
  • Late flashing. “Install flashing before starting to apply the siding.”

Installation

Fastening for wind: spacing, depth and room to move

Spacing and penetration

The manual says to “Space the fasteners a maximum of 16" (406mm) apart for horizontal siding panels”, closer for vertical panels. The Polymeric Exteriors installation tips ask that each fastener penetrate “a minimum of 1 1/4″ (32mm) into nailable material, such as wood sheathing and framing.”

Room to move

A nail driven tight pins the panel. The manual's rule: “Allow approximately 1/32" (0.8mm) (about the thickness of a dime) clearance between the fastener head and the siding panel.”

Installation

Do you need house wrap under siding?

Do you need house wrap under siding? For vinyl the manual says a barrier is required: vinyl siding “must be installed over a water-resistive barrier”, the layer that stops water that gets behind the cladding. House wrap is one kind. Ask which barrier the bid names and how it laps over the window flashing.

Installation

Can you install siding over existing siding?

Can you install siding over existing siding? Sometimes. The manual's words: “In re-siding, furring or removal of uneven original siding may be necessary”, and never over rot. On older Omaha houses the layer underneath may carry lead paint or asbestos, covered further down.

Installation

The siding installation process, in order

The siding installation process, for any material:

  1. Paperwork. Re-Side permit; for a landmark, the Certificate of Approval first.
  2. Strip and repair. Old siding off or furred, rot replaced.
  3. Barrier and flashing. Water-resistive barrier, flashing at openings.
  4. Starter and corners. “The corner post should extend 3/4" (19mm) below the starter strip.”
  5. Panels. Course by course, nailed mid-slot, with end gaps.
  6. Trim and close-out. Trim, soffit, cleanup and any inspection on the permit.

Timing

How long does siding installation take?

How long does siding installation take? It depends on wall area, layers removed, rot found, weather and the permit. No public source gives days per house, so put start and finish dates in the contract.

Planning

Should you replace windows and siding at the same time?

Should you replace windows and siding at the same time? The flashing argues for it: each window is flashed into the barrier the siding laps over. Window Replacement is its own Omaha permit type. If the opening changes, the city's FAQ is clear: “Any alteration to the framing of a window, door, a load bearing wall, exterior wall, or roof would cause it to be a structural repair.”

Nebraska Law

Nebraska contractor registration: what it shows

Who has to register

Nebraska contractor registration comes from the Contractor Registration Act: “Before performing any construction work in Nebraska, a contractor shall be registered with the department.” The act leaves out owners working on their own property and anyone who “earns less than five thousand dollars annually for construction services”.

Looking a company up

For a nebraska contractor registration lookup, the Department of Labor searches by name, city or number. The number is “a five-digit number followed by a two-digit number indicating the year of issuance”. Match it to the bid.

Nebraska Law

Do you need a contractors license in Nebraska?

Do you need a contractors license in nebraska for siding? What the state requires is registration, and it says what that means: “It is not the intent of the Legislature to endorse the quality or performance of services provided by any individual contractor.” The Department of Labor agrees: registration “does not ensure quality of work or protect against fraud.” References and an insurance certificate are yours to ask for.

City of Omaha

Does new siding require a permit in Omaha?

Re-siding is its own permit type

Does new siding require a permit in Omaha? The city's list of residential building permits includes “Re-Side”, and it is not starred as a type that needs plans. The code is the 2018 IRC with local amendments. Apply for the city of omaha building permit first: “You must apply for and receive an approved permit before starting construction.” Permits without review “will be issued at the time of application.”

When the wall framing changes

“All structural repairs require full plan review.” We could not obtain the city's list of permit-exempt work; for a borderline job, ask the Building and Development Division.

City of Omaha

Omaha landmarks and historic districts

Local listings need approval first

Omaha's local preservation list holds 120 entries by our count: 108 buildings, four historic districts (Bemis Park, Drake Court, Old Market & Wholesale and West Central-Cathedral) and eight sites and structures. For those, “A Certificate of Approval (COA) from the LHPC is required before a building permit for any alteration will be issued.”

National Register only

A house listed only nationally is different: “Historic review is not required for changes to properties which are only listed on the National Register of Historic Places.” The city also names “Removal of vinyl or metal siding” among projects that need no review. To check an address, look in the city's DOGIS map for the letters LL before the zoning code.

After a Storm

After a hailstorm: claims and the Nebraska siding matching law

The matching rule, in its own words

The nebraska siding matching law is an insurance rule, 210 NAC 60-010.01(B): “When a loss requires replacement of items and the replacement items do not reasonably match in quality, color or size, the insurer shall replace all items in the area so as to conform to a reasonably uniform appearance. This applies to both interior and exterior losses.” It covers replacement-cost policies.

Contracts paid from a claim

For claim-paid exterior work you may cancel “prior to midnight on the later of the third business day” after signing or a written denial. A contractor “shall not promise to rebate any portion of an insurance deductible”, and “A contract entered into with a residential contractor is void if the residential contractor violates any provision of the Insured Homeowners Protection Act.”

Nebraska Law

Door-to-door siding sales in Nebraska

Nebraska's home solicitation law lets a buyer cancel “until midnight of the third business day” after the seller gives the required notice,. The federal FTC Cooling-Off Rule, 16 CFR Part 429, covers home sales with “a purchase price of $25 or more”.

Older Houses

Older Omaha houses: lead paint and asbestos siding

Lead paint before 1978

For a house built before 1978, EPA requires that firms paid to “perform work that disturbs painted surfaces in homes, childcare facilities and preschools built before 1978 be certified”. In general, “the RRP Rule does not apply to homeowners doing RRP projects in their own pre-1978 homes.”

Asbestos siding

Before any asbestos siding removal nebraska homeowners plan, EPA says: “Material that is in good condition and will not be disturbed (by remodeling, for example) should be left alone.” If it must come off, “Removal is complex and must be done only by a trained and accredited asbestos professional.”

Planning

A few damaged boards, or a whole new wall?

Not every storm means new siding. Our siding repair guide shows how to tell if your siding has hail damage and when a patch holds. For a full job, the squares calculator works out how much siding the walls take. Whether you searched siding repair omaha or siding replacement omaha, settle which job it is first. The same goes for a siding repair omaha ne quote.

Search Record

Who showed up in Omaha's map results

On October 23, 2026 we searched siding installation omaha from six points around the metro; a map of local firms topped every result. Carp's Exteriors, Premier Exteriors and Midlands Siding & Window Co led from the center. Searches for siding companies omaha and siding contractors omaha showed the same central three. This is a record of one search, not a ranking.

Before you call anyone

The flat-fee match — we are paid for the introduction, not for the size of your job

Most siding advice is written by the company that wants to do the work or the company that makes the product. That is not a failing of the people who read it; it is a defect in who is talking: the measurement, the estimate and the invoice come from one party, and no amount of care on your side fixes that.

We are built the other way round. We do not install, repair or sell anything, so the payment reaches us when you are connected to a licensed, insured siding contractor — the same amount whether you need one panel replaced or four walls re-clad. Nobody here has a reason to talk you into the larger number. You can check that rather than take it on trust: how we make money is written down, and this site keeps telling readers when one wall is enough. Why does not everyone work this way? Because a flat fee leaves money on the table every time the job turns out to be big.

Count your squares

Waiting is the one thing that actually costs money. A wall that is open to the weather does not get better and does not wait for a convenient week; the water that gets behind the siding finds the sheathing, the framing and the drywall inside. A cracked panel over a window lets the next storm in. And if it turns out to be one panel and a quarter-hour, say so when you ask. We will tell you, and that answer earns us nothing.

Not for you if: you want a price over the phone — nobody honest gives one without measuring the house; you need a guarantee of arrival within the hour — we cannot promise that for a company we do not run; the building is commercial; or you would rather do it yourself, in which case the pages on this site are written so that you can.
