Siding companies in Wichita, KS: the license, the permit and the hail they plan for
Home › Wichita siding companies · Researched by the Siding Pros USA editorial team · · 13 min read
Siding companies in Wichita, KS work under a city-county license, a building permit and, when the roof is in the job, a state registration, in the county with the most severe hail of any city we cover. Here is how to check a firm.
Wichita siding companies in six points
Search “siding companies wichita ks” and Google opens with a map of three firms. This page is about Wichita, Kansas, in Sedgwick County, not Wichita Falls, Texas, and it covers the checks that map leaves out for anyone hiring residential siding wichita ks firms.
- The license is local. MABCD, the Wichita-Sedgwick County building department, licenses siding contractors; the state does not.
- Most re-siding needs a permit. Anything over 400 square feet of siding in 12 months goes through MABCD.
- A roof in the deal adds a state check. Roofing work needs Kansas roofing registration with the Attorney General.
- Hail here runs large. Our NOAA count: 523 severe hail reports in 2006 to 2025, 128 of them 1.75 inches or larger.
- Let the adjuster see it first. Permanent repairs before the inspection can cost you the claim.
- Signed at your door? You have three business days to cancel.
Our Count
Sedgwick County hail, 2006–2025: our count of NOAA reports
All of Wichita lies in Sedgwick County. We counted its severe hail reports in twenty yearly NOAA Storm Events files, plus four neighbors: what siding wichita ks walls face.
| County | Hail 1 inch or larger (days) | Hail 1.75 inches or larger | Days with 2.5 inches or larger | Largest hail | Wind 65 knots or more |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sedgwick | 523 (130) | 128 | 15 | 7.75 in | 80 |
| Butler | 314 (108) | 85 | 10 | 5.00 in | 48 |
| Sumner | 150 (75) | 40 | 8 | 2.75 in | 18 |
| Kingman | 122 (64) | 43 | 5 | 4.00 in | 21 |
| Harvey | 98 (52) | 24 | 3 | 2.75 in | 27 |
523 reports, and one in four at 1.75 inches or larger
Our hail line is the Storm Prediction Center's: “Hail 1 inch in diameter or larger.” Sedgwick County crossed it on 130 days, in all twenty years. 128 reports (24 percent) reached 1.75 inches; 2.5-inch stones fell on 15 days.
Butler, Sumner, Kingman and Harvey alongside
The neighbors logged fewer reports, from 314 in Butler down to 98 in Harvey. Butler's 5.00 inches is the largest stone outside Sedgwick. Sedgwick also has the most people, and more people send more reports.
Our Count
May and June: when the big stones fall
May brought 174 reports and June 118: 56 percent of the total. 77 percent came between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. September logged 14 reports of 1.75 inches or more, more than July and August together.
| Month | Hail 1 inch or larger | Hail 1.75 inches or larger |
|---|---|---|
| February | 7 | 0 |
| March | 39 | 5 |
| April | 98 | 27 |
| May | 174 | 45 |
| June | 118 | 25 |
| July | 25 | 7 |
| August | 18 | 1 |
| September | 26 | 14 |

One Storm
September 15, 2010: a 7.75-inch stone over west Wichita
The largest stone in our count fell on September 15, 2010. NOAA's record of that storm describes a swath “approximately 5 miles wide and 15 miles long, stretching from northwest of Goddard, Kansas through the western and southern half of Wichita, Kansas to near Rose Hill, Kansas.” It adds that hail “pounded roofs and cars along its path with over 35,000 claims turned into insurance agencies.”
The record stone “broke the state record for diameter, measuring 7.75 inches across.” The busiest day by count, April 26, 2016, brought 34 reports, none above two inches. Both kinds of day end in hail damage siding insurance claims.
Our Count
Wichita against the other cities we track
Same count, 12 counties behind our city pages: Sedgwick comes first on both lines, 523 reports of 1-inch hail against 315 and 273 for the next two, and 128 reports of 1.75 inches against 102. Allegheny County, home of our Pittsburgh page, logged 187, with 27 at 1.75 inches. Omaha's county: 206.
Materials
Best siding for hail: what testing and makers say
IBHS, the insurers' research lab, is plain about walls: “Hail can damage roof coverings, siding, windows, fences, lawn furniture, and more.” In its 2013 hailstorm demonstration it noted that for siding and windows “no standards exist for these items.” A later IBHS cladding study is open only to members.
So the best siding for hail has no public rating. Compare what each product promises in writing, and what the house siding wichita ks firms you call put in the contract; our siding types guide covers the rest.
| Material | What the paperwork says | Ask the firm |
|---|---|---|
| Vinyl | VSI certification to ASTM D3679 includes an impact test | Is the line VSI certified? What does the warranty say about hail? |
| Fiber cement | The HZ5 warranty we read names hail, and excludes severe weather | Which warranty edition applies? |
| Steel and aluminum | No public hail test result we could find | How does the maker's warranty treat dents? |
| Wood | No public hail test result we could find | How are split boards matched? |
Is vinyl siding hail resistant?
A VSI certified line “Complies with the ASTM D3679 product standard”, and the tests include “Weatherability, wind load, and impact resistance”. No stone size is named, and VSI certifies the product “(not the installation)”. Ask vinyl siding companies wichita ks homeowners call for the certified line by name (vinyl guide).
Is steel siding hail resistant?
We found no independent hail test of steel siding; metal shows hail as dents. Anyone bidding metal siding wichita ks jobs should show you the warranty's dent clause (metal guide).
Is fiber cement siding hail resistant in Kansas?
The HZ5 warranty we read, effective September 2018, says the board “will resist damage caused by” hail, and its exclusions list “Acts of God”. IBHS has compared “siding (vinyl, and fiber-cement) to illustrate variation in performance.” A label reading impact resistant siding is the maker's own claim (fiber cement guide).
After A Storm
How to tell if your siding has hail damage after a Wichita storm
Start from the ground. IBHS advises: “Look for spatter marks or impact dents on items like A/C units, gutters, metal flashing, downspouts, or even patio furniture.” Then walk the storm side. Hail damage to vinyl siding shows as cracks and holes; metal dents; fiber cement chips. Photograph each wall, dated, before anyone touches it. How each kind is fixed is on our siding repair page.

Insurance
Does insurance cover hail damage to siding?
Does insurance cover hail damage to siding? Usually, subject to the deductible. The Kansas Insurance Department warns: “Most homeowner policies have a separate wind/hail deductible that is generally one to two percent of the amount of insurance carried on the structure.” Its advice: “If the damage exceeds your policy deductible, you will want to report the damage or loss to your insurance agent or company.”
The order of hail damage siding insurance claims, in the department's words:
Hold off on lasting repairs
“If you make permanent repairs before the insurance company inspects the damage, your claim may be denied.”
Be there
“Be present when the adjuster inspects your property.”
Know the clock
“An insurance company has 10 days to respond to communications and 30 days to determine if the loss is covered.”
Compare bids
“Get more than one bid, and hire a local, reputable contractor to do the repair work.”
Matching, and the claim helper at the door
New panels rarely match faded old ones, hence searches for “matching siding insurance claim”. We found no Kansas matching rule in the statutes and department pages we read; your policy and the adjuster's estimate decide. A stranger offering to run your claim may hold no license: in Kansas, “residential lines public adjusting is neither prohibited nor required to have a license”.
License
City of Wichita contractor license: what MABCD issues
The state registers roofers, not siding firms. The Metropolitan Area Building and Construction Department (MABCD) licenses contractors under one city-county code, so a city of wichita contractor license also covers the county. The code has a trade license for this work: “Siding contractor's license shall entitle the holder thereof to contract for and to install, repair and replace exterior wall coverings.” A “Roofing and siding” license covers both.
Siding contractors in wichita ks may instead hold a general class; the residential one is “limited to construction, remodeling, repair or wrecking of one-and two-family residences”. That is the general contractor license wichita ks searches mean. The code adds: “No building permit shall be issued to any contractor who has not first obtained a license”. Licensees carry liability cover of at least $300,000 per occurrence, plus workers' compensation and auto cover, and print their MABCD number in ads. Exempt: an owner remodeling a single-family home for their own use, and nonstructural jobs up to a total cost of $2,500.
Checking a license before you sign
Kansas contractor license requirements come down to two lookups: this one, and the roofing registration below. Enter the firm's name in the MABCD portal's “Lookup Contractor License”, and check the class and expiry.
Permit
The MABCD permit and the 400-square-foot line
Do you need a permit to replace siding? The code text we read lists, among work exempt from a permit: “Repair or replacement of roofing and/or siding materials not exceeding 400 square feet (37.16 m2) within any 12 month period.” Past that line, the job needs a MABCD permit, and the fee table names a “Siding permit”. Four hundred square feet is four squares; count yours. That is the usual answer to “mabcd permit” and “building permit wichita ks” questions for a re-side.
Emergency repairs can come first: “Where repairs must be performed in an emergency situation, the permit application shall be submitted within the next working business day to the building official.” The 2024 code updates we read keep the same line.
State Registration
Kansas roofing contractor registration, and why a siding job can involve it
Many firms sell roof and siding together. The Kansas Roofing Registration Act names only roofing: “No person shall engage in the business of or act in the capacity of a roofing contractor within this state without having a valid registration certificate as required by this act.” Kansas roofing contractor registration needs liability cover of at least $500,000, is renewed yearly, and its number goes on vehicles, signs and contracts.
A general contractor is exempt only if “the roofing services do not constitute more than 50% of the total project cost” and it does no door-to-door selling. For a kansas roofing registration lookup, use the Attorney General's roofing registration directory, and remember: “Registration does not constitute an endorsement of a listed contractor by the Attorney General.” The AG also warns: “Be wary if the contractor asks you to get the permit – it could mean that the firm is not registered.”
Your Rights
A knock after the storm: three business days to cancel
Under K.S.A. 50-640, “a consumer has the right to cancel a door-to-door sale made within this state until midnight of the third business day after the day on which the consumer signs”. It covers sales of $25 or more signed away from the seller's business, “including those in response to or following an invitation by the consumer”. Sundays and holidays do not count, and the seller must tell you aloud. The federal rule, 16 CFR 429, gives the same three days.
The repair-visit exception
When you asked the firm to visit “for the purpose of repairing or performing maintenance”, the repair is not a door-to-door sale, but extra work sold then is. To complain about a Wichita firm, the Attorney General's form points Sedgwick County residents to the district attorney: “You may wish to file your complaint with your local district attorney’s office.”
Older Houses
Wichita homes built before 1978: lead paint and old shingles
Census estimates date 58.3 percent of Wichita's 175,539 homes before 1980; 66.7 percent are detached houses. The lead rule starts at 1978, and Kansas runs its own program: the EPA lists Kansas among states it “has authorized” for this. The state health department, KDHE, says renovation firms on pre-1978 housing “must be licensed as a Lead Activity Firm or Lead Renovation Firm.”
| Year built | Wichita city | Sedgwick County |
|---|---|---|
| 1939 or earlier | 10.3% | 9.0% |
| 1940 to 1959 | 25.7% | 23.4% |
| 1960 to 1979 | 22.3% | 21.5% |
| 1980 to 1999 | 24.0% | 25.0% |
| 2000 or later | 17.7% | 21.2% |
The EPA lists “Roofing and siding shingles” among products that may contain asbestos, and says: “If building materials in your home aren’t damaged and won’t be disturbed, you do not need to have your home tested for asbestos.” Removal “must be done only by a trained and accredited asbestos professional.”

Warranties
Siding manufacturer warranty vs siding installation warranty
A siding manufacturer warranty covers the product; a siding installation warranty is the firm's promise about its work, real only in the contract. The AG's advice for storm work fits both: “Insist on a contract that states exactly what work will be done, the quality and quantity of materials used, warranties, timetables, the total price of the job, and the schedule of payments.” Ask who registers the maker's warranty.
What Google Shows
The Google map for Wichita on October 28
On October 28, 2026 we searched “siding companies wichita ks” from six places: nationwide, Wichita, Derby, Andover, Maize and Haysville. All six maps showed the same three firms: Greenway Exteriors, Continental Siding - Wichita Showroom and Mid America Exteriors & Remodeling. Greenway and Continental also led the map for siding contractors wichita ks and siding repair wichita ks. Google suggests “best siding companies wichita ks”. We do not rank firms.

Before you call anyone
The flat-fee match — we are paid for the introduction, not for the size of your job
Most siding advice is written by the company that wants to do the work or the company that makes the product. That is not a failing of the people who read it; it is a defect in who is talking: the measurement, the estimate and the invoice come from one party, and no amount of care on your side fixes that.
We are built the other way round. We do not install, repair or sell anything, so the payment reaches us when you are connected to a licensed, insured siding contractor — the same amount whether you need one panel replaced or four walls re-clad. Nobody here has a reason to talk you into the larger number. You can check that rather than take it on trust: how we make money is written down, and this site keeps telling readers when one wall is enough. Why does not everyone work this way? Because a flat fee leaves money on the table every time the job turns out to be big.
Waiting is the one thing that actually costs money. A wall that is open to the weather does not get better and does not wait for a convenient week; the water that gets behind the siding finds the sheathing, the framing and the drywall inside. A cracked panel over a window lets the next storm in. And if it turns out to be one panel and a quarter-hour, say so when you ask. We will tell you, and that answer earns us nothing.
Not for you if: you want a price over the phone — nobody honest gives one without measuring the house; you need a guarantee of arrival within the hour — we cannot promise that for a company we do not run; the building is commercial; or you would rather do it yourself, in which case the pages on this site are written so that you can.
